Thickeners and Clarifiers
MEP Ltd supplies a comprehensive range of Thickeners & Clarifiers to
satisfy most requirements and the designs are continually updated to meet
today's standards and requirements.
The range is based on two types of mechanism:
- LSG Series Thickener rake Drive Mechanisms.
A heavy-duty drive mechanism with automatic rake raise and lower
- X.L. Series Thickeners
A heavy-duty but simple rake driving mechanism.
The LSG Series comprises a spurgear and pinion drive system with
automatic raise and lowering of the rakes and specially designed to cope
with conditions where fluctuations in the feed solids demand flexibility
from the Thickener. Its design is heavy-duty to deal with the rigours
of mineral processing.
There are three torque ratings available to accommodate various tank diameters
up to 40 Metres:-

The prime mover of these rake drive mechanisms is an electro-magnetic
induction coupling, which also gives an indication of the torque loading
on the rakes. A signal of the torque loading is transmitted to automatically
control the height of the rakes.
As the load transmitted through the rakes reaches a pre-determined level
the rakes raise to the top of the accumulated sludge. This enables the
thickener tank to provide surge capacity at high feed conditions. When
the torque on the rakes drops back, the rakes then follow the top of the
sludge down until they reaches equilibrium at the lowest point.
In the unusual event of the rakes stalling, due to an excessive load or
an obstruction, the main drive mechanism will slip, preventing damage
to the rake arms.
There is also an audible alarm that gives warning of a build up within the
tank.
X.L. Series of Thickener / Clarifiers
The XL series provides a rotation only mechanism for less arduous duties
where fluctuations in the feed rate to the thickener can be handled by a
variable speed underflow pump.
This model has been designed to meet the demand for a rugged but simple
and cost effective unit.

H.C. Thickeners.
The HC Thickener range is a complete free standing unit of mild steel
construction incorporating our XL drive and consists of both tank, superstructure
and drive mechanism mounted above ground on a prepared concrete slab.
It is easily transported to site and quickly ready for use.
HC series tanks can be supplied from 2m diameter to 12m diameter and maybe
designed around the specific requirements of the customer.
Tank Designs
We offer a wide range of standard as well as custom designed tank designs
including:
- Mild steel conical (HC).
- Mild steel conventional with sloping base.
- Mild steel conventional with flat base.
- Mild steel shell walls mounted on a concrete base.
- The units can also be manufactured to fit a concrete tank provided
by the customer.
General
The following points are worth noting:
- The feed rate to a Thickener and the settling rate of the solids
will vary.
- Larger thickeners are better able to cope with higher feed rates.
- A larger Thickener will generally require less operator attention.
- You are unlikely to complain that your thickener is too big.
